Phonics Bingo Card Generator
Printable phonics bingo for early readers: CVC words, letter sounds, rhymes and digraphs – the teacher reads the call, children find the match.
How to make phonics bingo cards
- Open the page. It starts in “My words” mode with the CVC words list loaded.
- Edit the word list if you want a different set. Put one item on each line, and add or delete lines as needed. To print one text on the card and another on the call list, write “card text | call text”, for example “sh | ship”.
- Choose a grid size: 3 × 3, 4 × 4 or 5 × 5.
- Turn on the free space for a 3 × 3 or 5 × 5 grid if you want one. The centre square says FREE by default, and you can change the text. A 4 × 4 grid has no free space.
- Check the item count; if the list is too short, the tool says how many more items you need.
- Set the number of cards, from 1 to 500. The default is 10.
- Choose the print options: 1, 2 or 4 cards per page, US Letter or A4 paper, a card title, an optional letters row, an optional card number, and one of six colours.
- Use Previous and Next to look through the cards, then select Print cards for the cards, or Print call list for a shuffled calling order with tick boxes and the full list in order for checking a winner.
New set creates new random cards with a new game code. Copy link opens exactly the same cards again, including your word list. To save a PDF, choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog and set the scale to 100%, not “fit to page”.
How to play phonics bingo
Phonics bingo is played like classic bingo, but each call is a sound or a word. The teacher reads a call, and children look for the matching word or letter on their card and cover it. The first child with a full line calls out bingo. With CVC and digraph words, the teacher can also say the word sound by sound, such as c-a-t, so children practise blending.
What are CVC words
CVC words are words with a consonant, then a vowel, then a consonant, such as cat, pig and sun. Each letter usually makes one sound, and the vowel is short. The preset list includes words such as map, fox, bus, hen and web.
How does rhyming bingo work
Rhyming words end with the same sound, starting from the vowel. On this page, the card shows a word such as cat, and the call says “rhymes with hat”. Each card word comes from a different rhyme family, so each call matches only one square. The preset includes pairs such as cake and lake, and moon and spoon.
What are digraphs
Digraphs are two letters that make one sound together. The common ones are sh, ch, th, wh and ck. The digraph word preset includes ship, chin, bath, whale and duck. To make a digraph-sound card, use the format “sh | ship”, which prints sh on the card and calls out ship.
How does beginning sounds bingo work?
The Beginning sounds list puts a single letter on each square and a word on the call list, such as b | ball or s | sun. The teacher says the word, and children find the letter that makes its first sound. The letter x is left out because few simple words start with its sound.
What grid size for kindergarten
A 3 × 3 card, with 8 squares and a free space, or a 4 × 4 card keeps the card easy to read for kindergarten children. A 5 × 5 card suits first grade, where children can handle more squares and a longer word list.
Frequently asked questions
Is phonics bingo free to make?
Yes. The generator is free to use and needs no sign-up. The cards are made in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Can I save phonics bingo cards as a PDF?
Yes. In the print dialog, choose “Save as PDF” as the printer and set the scale to 100%. This keeps the cards at full size.
Why are my bingo cards all different?
Every card in a set has a different set of squares, so no two cards match. If your list is too short for the number of cards you want, the tool tells you how many different cards are possible.
Can I use my own words for phonics bingo?
Yes. Replace the preset list with your own words, one per line. Use “card text | call text” when the spoken call should differ from what is printed on the card.
Can I call the game online?
Yes. Select “Use with the online caller” to open the bingo caller page with the same game and word list.
How many phonics bingo cards can I print?
Up to 500 cards in one set. With the 46 CVC words on a 5 × 5 card with a free space there are 7,890,371,113,950 different sets of 24 squares, so every child in a class gets a different card.
